What Is Paraquat?

Paraquat is an herbicide used in commercial applications. It’s extremely effective at controlling weeds, but it is also extremely toxic to humans. Due to its toxicity, it’s banned in 32 countries. Despite this, it remains in use throughout the U.S. to control weeds in commercial agriculture.

The largest manufacturer of Paraquat is a company called Syngenta, which distributes Paraquat under the brand name Gramoxone®.

Why Is Paraquat Dangerous?

Paraquat can cause damage to the lungs, liver, kidneys, and esophagus if ingested or inhaled. It can also easily cause chemical burns on one’s skin through casual contact. Allegedly, death is even possible through concentrated skin exposure.

Possible symptoms of Paraquat exposure include the following:

  • Breathing problems
  • Confusion
  • Dehydration
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Racing heart rate
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Muscle fatigue

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms above and believe it could be a result of your exposure to Paraquat, our Paraquat attorneys in Alabama want to hear from you. Reach out to us today for help validating your claim!

Paraquat is also linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. Research by the National Institute of Health and The Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council found that exposure to this herbicide may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by 2.5 times that over the general population.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a disorder affecting the central nervous system. It often affects one’s movement, coordination, and balance. Symptoms can begin with hand tremors or stiffness in one’s legs or arms. Early signs can also include impaired balance and sluggish movement or reflexes.

Who Is at Risk of Paraquat Exposure?

Because Paraquat is mostly widely used in commercial agriculture, those who are at most risk can include farmers, field workers, forestry workers, and commercial landscapers. Paraquat can be deployed via crop dusters, so pilots, aircraft mechanics, chemical mixers, tank fillers, and flaggers may also have been exposed.

Additionally, those who merely live near farms, railroads, or other locations where Paraquat is used can also be affected.
