GM Recalls Tens of Millions of Vehicles
In the past year, a design defect in the ignition switch of General Motors vehicles has led to the recall of nearly 30 million vehicles. There have been more than 40 rounds of recalls stemming from this problem. The defective ignition switches potentially could turn off the car’s engine and airbag system during the course of driving. These defects have been linked to at least 30 deaths and many more injuries. Significant controversy erupted after it was revealed that GM knew that the design defect existed for a number of years.
This recall has affected vehicles models from several GM brands with model years ranging from 1997 to 2014 (model years affected for each vehicle may vary).
For example, the following makes and models had defects:
- Buick: Lacrosse and Lucerne
- Cadillac: CTS, Deville, DTA and SRX
- Chevrolet: Camaro, Cobalt, HHR, Impala, Malibu and Monte Carlo
- Oldsmobile: Aledo and Intrigue
- Pontiac: G5, Grand Am, Grand Prix and Solstice
- Saturn: Ion and Sky
