The law firm of Morris, Andrews, Talmadge & Driggers, LLC is reviewing claims for injuries and illnesses from the use of e-cigarette or vaping products. In September, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent JUUL Labs Inc. a warning letter stating the company had deceptively marketed its e-cigarette products as a lower-risk alternative to cigarettes. Furthermore, the letter condemned the e-cigarette company for its outreach to youth, developing a new generation addicted to nicotine. As they stand, the FDA’s accusations aim to put liability for illnesses and injuries related to JUUL product use onto the company.
Widespread Worry Over JUUL-Related Illnesses
The injuries and illnesses tied to the use of JUUL’s products have caused an epidemic across the country. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more than 1,000 cases of lung injury and 18 deaths connected to the use of e-cigarette products.
JUUL users included in the CDC study reported symptoms of:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Fever
Approximately 70% of these patients were male, and 80% were under the age of 35. Some even exhibited signs of a rare pulmonary disease. It is highly unusual for such a large number of otherwise healthy and relatively young men to suffer pulmonary concerns and related health issues.
JUUL Targets Youths with Marketing Campaigns
Thousands of teenagers became the victims of JUUL’s marketing practices to promote vaping. A representative from JUUL even presented to students that its vaping products were safer than cigarettes. Schools are having to use their budget to combat the epidemic in their classrooms. Some school districts have had to hire staff and create programs to aid the students’ nicotine addiction. School districts in multiple states are suing JUUL for the negative impact vaping has had on their learning environment and resources.
